Any move to amend or repeal the Sedition Act will require a thorough and inclusive review involving all relevant stakeholders, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
He explained that the process must take into account the views of law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, academia, civil society organisations, and the public to ensure any decision reflects Malaysia’s current social and political realities.
“The ministry continues to review and improve existing legislation, including the Sedition Act, to ensure its enforcement remains appropriate, relevant, and aligned with the principles of human rights as enshrined in the Federal Constitution,” Saifuddin said in a written parliamentary reply.
The question was raised by Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN–Kota Baru), who asked whether the government plans to amend or abolish the Sedition Act, in line with Pakatan Harapan’s election manifesto that pledged to remove outdated and oppressive laws.
