Fans of the Mummy franchise have reason to celebrate: The Mummy 4 is officially in development. Filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are set to direct the new installment, confirmed by multiple outlets in November 2025.
Nearly three decades have passed since the original The Mummy premiered in 1999, surprising audiences with its blend of action, adventure, horror, and comedy while earning over $409 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. The film follows adventurer Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) and Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) as they uncover the lost city of Hamunaptra—only to awaken the cursed high priest Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo).
Fraser reflected on the original film in a 2022 interview with Popverse, saying, “I loved being part of a movie that we didn’t know if it was an action, comedy, horror, adventure, or romance. I think it had so much appeal because everybody wanted a little bit of all of those things.”
The original film was followed by The Mummy Returns (2001), which grossed $443 million worldwide. Fraser returned for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), but Weisz was unable to reprise her role due to scheduling conflicts.
What Will The Mummy 4 Be About?
While official plot details remain under wraps, fans speculate that the O’Connells’ next adventure could take them to Peru. The third film ended with Rick, Evelyn (played by Maria Bello), their son Alex (Luke Ford), and his love interest Lin (Isabella Leong) defeating the resurrected Emperor Han in China, leaving hints of new discoveries abroad.
At the climax of Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, the Emperor transformed into a three-headed dragon and commanded an undead army. With the help of Lin’s mother, Zi Yuan (Michelle Yeoh), and a magical dagger, Rick and Alex defeated the Emperor, who was finally stripped of immortality. The family decided to retire, but the final scenes teased new adventures—and possibly mummies in Peru.
Who’s Returning for The Mummy 4?
Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reportedly in talks to return as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell. Fraser has expressed enthusiasm for reprising his role, telling GQ in 2022, “Absolutely… that was great fun.” Weisz also spoke fondly of her experience in The Mummy, praising the cast and the “charm” of the original films in a 2023 interview.
Directors and Screenwriter
Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett, best known for Ready or Not (2019) and Scream (2022, 2023), will direct the new film. David Coggeshall, whose credits include Prey (2019) and The Family Plan (2023), has confirmed he is writing the screenplay.
Release Date
No official release date has been announced yet, but excitement is already building among fans eager to see Fraser, Weisz, and the O’Connells return to the big screen for another thrilling adventure.
