A 50-year-old woman, surnamed T, noticed a small, hard lump on the left side of her forehead for years but didn’t think much of it. Recently, friends pointed out that her forehead appeared slightly swollen, prompting her to seek medical advice at the Plastic Surgery Department of NTU Hospital Hsinchu, where Dr. Zhang Yancheng examined her. CT scans confirmed the diagnosis: a benign frontal bone tumor. Although harmless, Dr. Zhang recommended surgical removal to rule out other conditions and improve appearance.
Slow-Growing Benign Bone Tumors Can Affect Appearance or Nerve Function
Dr. Zhang explained that frontal bone tumors are slow-growing, benign bone lesions that commonly occur in the craniofacial region, especially the forehead, temples, and around the sinuses. The exact cause is unclear but may involve genetics, chronic inflammation, or previous trauma. Most patients discover them incidentally during routine check-ups or by noticing a firm, painless bump in the mirror.
While usually asymptomatic, larger tumors can affect appearance and, in rare cases, compress nearby nerves or sinuses, causing headaches or pressure around the eyes. If a lump continues to grow or causes cosmetic concern, imaging and possible surgical removal are recommended, along with differential diagnosis to rule out other cranial bone conditions.
Surgery Is the Primary Treatment; Minimally Invasive Options Reduce Scarring
Surgical removal remains the main treatment for frontal bone tumors. Dr. Zhang noted that minimally invasive endoscopic techniques can hide incisions within the hairline, allowing precise tumor removal while minimizing visible facial scars.
Seek Medical Attention for Any Abnormal Facial Lumps
NTU Hospital Hsinchu advises the public to seek prompt medical evaluation for any unusual forehead or facial lumps, regardless of pain. Warning signs include rapid growth, irregular shape, uneven surface, redness, ulceration, or tenderness. Early diagnosis and treatment help prevent complications and maintain a natural appearance, ensuring a high quality of life.
