Former NFL Star to Face Attempted Murder Charge

Date:

Former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown has been extradited to the United States to face an attempted murder charge linked to a May shooting in Miami, authorities confirmed Thursday.

Brown, 36, was taken into custody in Dubai by the U.S. Marshals Service and flown to New Jersey, where he was booked into the Essex County Correctional Facility. He is expected to be transferred to Miami to face a second-degree attempted murder with a firearm charge, according to police.

“Following a thorough investigation, Antonio Brown has been identified as the shooter,” the Miami Police Department said in a statement, crediting the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office and U.S. Marshals for their cooperation in the case.

A warrant for Brown’s arrest was issued in June, after an incident on May 17 reportedly following a celebrity boxing event hosted by streamer Adin Ross.

Video footage circulated online appeared to show Brown arguing with several people before running toward them holding an object. Moments later, gunshots were heard. Witnesses could be heard yelling, “Oh my God, he has a gun,” before scattering.

Although Brown was briefly detained after the incident, police released him at the time because no victim could be located, according to local reports.

Brown later claimed during a livestream with Ross that he was attacked by several individuals, saying he blacked out due to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). “I don’t know what happened,” he said, adding that the altercation began when people tried to steal his jewelry.

The former Pittsburgh Steelers star has a long history of legal issues, including a 2019 civil sexual assault lawsuit, burglary charges, and a child support arrest in 2023. He previously served two years’ probation for assaulting a moving truck driver and was suspended by the NFL for violating its personal conduct policy.

Brown, once one of the league’s most dominant receivers, won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021 before leaving the NFL amid mounting controversies.
