Police Reveal Jakarta Mosque Attack Linked to Family Issues

Date:

Indonesian police believe the explosions that injured dozens at a Jakarta mosque last week were not motivated by religious extremism, but rather stemmed from personal issues involving the suspected perpetrator.

More than 50 people sustained burns and other injuries when blasts occurred during Friday prayers at a mosque located within a school complex in the Kelapa Gading area of the capital.

“The perpetrator is not against any particular religion,” Jakarta police spokesperson Budi Hermanto said, as quoted by state news agency Antara.

He added that investigators suspect the attack may have been driven by emotional distress.
“It appears the perpetrator felt neglected by their family, and those feelings accumulated,” Hermanto said.

Police have identified their main suspect as a 17-year-old student, who reportedly underwent surgery following the incident. Authorities did not clarify whether the suspect has been formally detained.

Officers also recovered suspected explosive materials and written notes during a search, police confirmed.

The investigation is ongoing. — Reuters
