Drivers using Jalan Genting Highlands will soon be required to pay a vehicle fee, Genting Malaysia Bhd confirmed, as part of efforts to fund ongoing maintenance and ensure safety along the steep, winding 24-kilometre private road.
In a statement today, the company said details of the new charge, including implementation date and fee structure, will be announced once finalised.
Genting Malaysia explained that the fee is intended to help offset the rising costs of maintaining the road and its surrounding slopes, expenses the company has solely borne since the 1960s.
“Heavy usage has caused significant wear and tear on Jalan Genting Highlands, requiring constant upkeep to ensure the safety of all road users,” the company said.
Built and managed by Genting Malaysia, the road provides access not only to Resorts World Genting but also to other attractions, businesses, and residential areas along the Genting Highlands corridor.
Citing the ‘user pays’ principle, the company said the vehicle fee is the most sustainable way to fund repairs, maintenance, and responses to unforeseen incidents, according to a report by Bernama.
“This ensures the road remains safe for all users, including local communities, businesses, tourists, and the general public,” Genting Malaysia added, emphasising that the initiative is being introduced as a private measure on a privately owned road and land.
The company said it maintains round-the-clock emergency teams stationed at mid-hill and hilltop points to handle potential incidents, noting that work on mountainous terrain is “challenging, hazardous, and costly” but essential for long-term safety.
Genting Malaysia also underscored the economic significance of Jalan Genting Highlands, saying the road has long been a catalyst for tourism, enterprise, and employment in Pahang and beyond.
“The existence of this road has enabled numerous tourism destinations and businesses to thrive across Genting Highlands, contributing to both state and national economic growth,” it said.
