Universal Music Malaysia has removed the music video for the latest single by its signed group, Dolla, titled Question, after criticism that its content was inappropriate and sensitive for local audiences.
The decision to take down the video from all digital platforms was made as a responsible measure to respect Malaysia’s multi-ethnic and multi-religious society.
“Our company operates within a diverse ecosystem like Malaysia, and we always respect cultural values, religious sensitivities, and the opinions of fans,” said Kim Lim, Managing Director of Universal Music Malaysia. “We take all feedback seriously and assume full responsibility for any oversight. Creativity and artistic expression must go hand in hand with sensitivity to local norms. Therefore, removing the video was a necessary step to maintain harmony and respect for all.”
The video had attracted widespread attention for Dolla’s appearance, with some members of the public describing the fashion style as overly provocative and flashy. The controversy also drew the attention of the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, who is reportedly reviewing potential Syariah criminal action against Muslim celebrities for provocative attire.
Celebrity preacher Asma’ Harun also publicly criticised the video, calling it immoral and shameful for Muslim women.
Kim Lim added that Universal Music Malaysia is committed to implementing stricter internal review processes for future creative projects, including professional consultations, to prevent similar controversies. “We thank all fans and the public who provided constructive feedback. We hope this matter can be handled appropriately without affecting the relationship between our artists, fans, and the Malaysian music community as a whole,” he said.
