Anwar Raps Political Secretary Over Illegal Contractor Support Letter

Date:

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim told the Dewan Rakyat that he had issued a stern reprimand to his political secretary for preparing a support letter for contractors involved in a hospital project.

During Minister’s Question Time yesterday, Anwar stressed that government regulations do not permit the issuance of such letters. Even for correspondence addressed directly to him, he said the furthest he can go is to write “please review.”

“That is the standard,” he said in response to a question from Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN–Pasir Mas).

“He prepared it, and I issued a strong reprimand because our regulations do not allow it. Some contracts require scrutiny, but support cannot be automatically given,” Anwar added.

Ahmad Fadhli had raised the matter by alleging that Anwar’s political secretary had listed six contractors in a support letter for a hospital project. According to him, only two of the six were qualified, while the remaining contractors did not have records with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB).
