A seven-year-old boy from India’s Jharkhand state has made history after successfully swimming across the challenging Palk Strait in under 10 hours, setting a world record as the youngest person to complete the feat.
The child, Ishank Singh, completed the approximately 29-kilometre open-water swim on 30 April, travelling from Talaimannar in Sri Lanka to Dhanushkodi in India. He finished the endurance challenge in 9 hours and 50 minutes.
The Palk Strait is known for its strong currents, unpredictable sea conditions and demanding long-distance route, making it one of the more difficult open-water swimming crossings in the region.
Following his achievement, Ishank was reportedly awarded a certificate by the Universal Records Forum, recognising him as the youngest and fastest swimmer to complete the crossing.
Reports said the boy undergoes intensive training of four to five hours daily and regularly practises in local water reservoirs to build endurance and adapt to long-distance swimming conditions.
His coaches praised his discipline and determination, noting that his focus and commitment were exceptional for his age. School authorities also commended his achievement, saying it reflects courage, consistency and perseverance.
The record-breaking swim has sparked widespread attention on Indian social media, with many users praising Ishank for bringing pride to both Jharkhand and the country.
