A pet dog’s death during a capture operation in Klang has sparked public outrage after its owner alleged the animal was strangled to death with a metal restraint, prompting a police investigation.
South Klang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Cha Hoong Fong confirmed that a police report had been lodged and said investigations are underway. He urged the public not to speculate while authorities establish the facts of the case.
The incident gained widespread attention after a video of the confrontation was circulated on social media.
The footage shows a man wearing white gloves restraining a dog with what appears to be a metal cable or chain while a crowd gathered to watch.
The dog’s owner can also be seen kneeling on the ground and pleading for the animal to be released as tensions escalated between both parties.
According to the police report lodged by the owner, the incident occurred at about 10.50pm on July 29 in Taman Teluk Gedung Indah, Klang.
The owner said she initially noticed a group of men near her home whom she believed were carrying out a dog-catching operation. However, she claimed she did not see any enforcement officers from the Royal City Council of Klang (MBDK) at the scene and therefore did not immediately realise her dog was being captured.
After searching for her pet and returning to the area, she allegedly found the dog with a restraint tightened around its neck.
She claimed that both she and her child repeatedly pleaded with those involved to release the dog, but their requests were ignored.
The owner also stated in her report that a neighbour claimed to have witnessed the dog being struck on the head with an iron rod before it was restrained. However, she acknowledged that she did not personally witness the alleged assault, leaving the matter to be investigated by police.
In response, the Royal City Council of Klang (MBDK) denied that its officers had intentionally caused the dog’s death.
In a statement, the council said personnel had already secured the dog when the owner allegedly became emotional and repeatedly pulled the animal in the opposite direction.
According to MBDK, the struggle caused the restraint to tighten further, preventing officers from loosening it in time and ultimately resulting in the dog’s death.
The council said it will fully cooperate with the police investigation and urged the public not to draw conclusions based solely on viral videos circulating online while investigations are ongoing.
