Immigration Dept Says Malaysia Among Fastest Passport Issuers, Also Ranks High Globally

Date:

Malaysia’s passport is not only recognised as one of the most powerful in the world, but also among the fastest to be issued.

In a recent post on X, the Immigration Department of Malaysia said the country is among those with the quickest passport production time globally, with some applications completed in as fast as one hour.

According to an infographic shared by the department, Malaysia’s passport processing system has undergone significant transformation over the decades.

Between 1960 and 1980, applications were handled manually and could take two to four weeks to complete.

By 1990, improvements in the system reduced the processing time to around seven to 14 days as procedures became more structured.

From 1998 to 2009, the introduction of biometric passports further sped up the process, bringing it down to between one and three days.

A major milestone was achieved on Feb 1, 2007, when the Immigration Department office in Wangsa Maju was able to issue passports within one hour, marking a key step in Malaysia’s digitalisation journey.

Since 2009, this one-hour passport processing service has been expanded nationwide.

The Immigration Department also compared Malaysia’s processing time with several other countries.

Malaysia can issue passports in as little as one hour, while Singapore takes about three to seven working days.

The United Kingdom requires three to 10 weeks, the United States around six to 10 weeks, Australia about six weeks, India two to six weeks, and Canada approximately 10 to 20 working days.

However, the one-hour timeframe is stated as “as early as”, depending on application type, documentation, branch capacity, and additional verification requirements.

Beyond speed, the Malaysian passport is also ranked among the most powerful globally.

According to the 2026 Henley Passport Index update, Malaysia is placed sixth in the world alongside Hungary, Poland, and the United Kingdom, offering visa-free access to 183 destinations.

The index evaluates 199 passports based on the number of destinations accessible without prior visa requirements, using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Singapore currently leads the ranking with access to 192 destinations, followed by Japan, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates in second place.

Meanwhile, the Passport Index by Arton Capital ranks Malaysia even higher at third globally, with a mobility score of 174.

For Malaysians who have experienced last-minute travel plans, the ability to renew a passport within an hour is a significant convenience.

Still, authorities advise applicants not to wait until the last minute.

Compared to many countries where processing can take weeks, Malaysia stands out for its efficiency in passport services.
