The Perak Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) has taken action following the suspected sale of RON95 petrol to a vehicle believed to be carrying a foreign registration number at a petrol station in Taiping on Tuesday.
Perak KPDN director Datuk Kamalludin Ismail said the department immediately launched an investigation after receiving a public complaint and information that had gone viral on social media.
Preliminary investigations found that the incident took place at about 4pm on Aug 10, when the purchase of RON95 petrol was made using a credit card through an external payment terminal (OTP).
“The vehicle involved is suspected to have a foreign registration number. Details of the sales transaction and CCTV recordings from the petrol station have been obtained and are being reviewed to assist the investigation,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.
Kamalludin said action had been taken against the petrol station for allegedly selling RON95 petrol to a foreign-registered motor vehicle without written permission from the Controller.
A separate case is also being investigated involving the alleged purchase of RON95 petrol for use by a foreign-registered vehicle without the required written approval.
Both cases are being investigated under the Supply Control Act 1961 and the Supply Control Regulations 1974.
Those convicted can face a fine of up to RM1 million, imprisonment for up to three years, or both. Corporations may face fines of up to RM2 million, while subsequent offences can carry fines of up to RM5 million.
Kamalludin urged the public to continue acting as the authorities’ eyes and ears by providing information on suspected misuse or diversion of controlled and subsidised goods.
The issue surfaced after a photograph circulated on social media showing a man filling RON95 petrol into a Toyota Corolla Altis bearing a foreign registration number at a petrol station in Taiping.
