Kuching Health Office Urges Public Not To Judge Rabies Risk By Appearance Of Animals

Date:

The Kuching Division Health Office has cautioned members of the public against assuming that dogs or cats that appear healthy are free from rabies infection.

In a statement shared on Facebook on Friday, the office said many people wrongly believe that animals showing no visible symptoms cannot carry the deadly virus.

It clarified that this is a misconception, stressing that infected animals can still transmit rabies during the incubation period before any obvious signs appear.

The health authority also warned that rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms develop, making early prevention and treatment crucial.

However, it emphasised that infection can be prevented if immediate action is taken following any bite or scratch from an animal.

Members of the public were advised to wash wounds thoroughly with soap and water for at least 15 minutes before seeking urgent medical attention at the nearest health facility.

The office also reminded those who begin anti-rabies treatment to complete the full course of injections as scheduled.

It further urged the public to act quickly and not wait for symptoms to appear, warning that delays in treatment could be fatal.
