Malaysia has once again reinforced its position as a global leader in Muslim-friendly tourism after being named the Best Muslim-Friendly Destination (OIC) in the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2026.
The prestigious recognition was announced during the Halal in Travel Awards ceremony in Singapore, marking the 11th consecutive year Malaysia has maintained its status as the world’s leading Muslim-friendly travel ecosystem.
In addition to securing the top overall award, Malaysia also ranked first in the categories of Most Accessible Muslim-Friendly Destination (OIC) and Muslim-Friendly Destination for Women.
The awards, jointly presented by Mastercard and CrescentRating, recognise destinations that demonstrate excellence and commitment in the Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality (MFTH) sector.
Representing Malaysia at the ceremony was Deputy Secretary-General (Tourism) of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), Chua Choon Hwa, who expressed appreciation to the organisers for their continued efforts in advancing the global Muslim travel industry.
“It is an honour to witness how much this segment has grown over the years. When Malaysia first ventured into the Muslim travel market, the concept was still unfamiliar to many destinations. Today, Muslim-friendly hospitality can be experienced around the world,” he said.
Chua attributed Malaysia’s continued success to the strategic efforts and initiatives undertaken by the Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC), an agency under MOTAC.
According to him, the ITC has played a key role in ensuring that Malaysia’s national hospitality guidelines continue to serve as a global benchmark for Muslim-friendly tourism standards.
The latest recognition further strengthens Malaysia’s reputation as a preferred destination for Muslim travellers, supported by its extensive halal-friendly infrastructure, accommodation, dining options and tourism services.
Industry observers believe the achievement will further boost Malaysia’s appeal among international Muslim travellers while reinforcing the country’s position as a leading hub for Islamic tourism and hospitality.
