Malaysian Diner Goes Viral After RM23 Steak “Looks Nothing Like Menu Photo”

Date:

A late-night meal has sparked widespread discussion online after a Malaysian diner expressed disappointment over a beef steak that looked very different from its menu image.

The customer, who shared the experience on Threads under the username @cuaaaaaoraite._, said the incident happened after midnight when they were hungry, unwell, and exhausted from a difficult day. The post has since gained nearly half a million views.

According to the post, the diner ordered a beef steak that appeared thick and well-presented in the menu photo. However, what was served was described as a very thin, overcooked piece of meat accompanied by fries, sauce, and a small portion of vegetables.

The user criticised the gap between expectation and reality, stating that while they were not expecting perfection, the actual dish was “hard, chewy and not even hot”, adding to their disappointment after a long day and recent illness.

The post included side-by-side images showing the advertised dish and what was served, quickly drawing attention from netizens who reacted with humour and criticism.

Some online users joked about the appearance of the steak, while others argued that the portion reflected the price point, noting that RM23 is relatively low for a steak dish and expectations should be adjusted accordingly.

Others pointed out that many restaurants include disclaimers stating that images are for illustration purposes only, though critics argued that drastic differences between promotional images and actual food could still be considered misleading.

The diner later clarified that the issue was not about expecting an exact replica of the menu photo, but rather the extremely thin cut of meat and overall quality of the dish.

The incident has since reignited discussions about food advertising standards, consumer expectations, and transparency in menu photography within the F&B industry.
