A crocodile measuring nearly 15 feet was captured in Kampung Lampasan, Tuaran, on Saturday morning, but residents fear more reptiles are still lurking in the river.
The crocodile was caught at around 10.30am after it took the bait of a dead chicken attached to a fishing line set up by villagers.
A resident, who declined to be named, said the successful capture had done little to ease concerns, as several other crocodiles were still believed to be living in the river.
“Whenever we go to the river or head out to sea to fish, we’re always worried that a crocodile could be watching us,” he said.
The villager urged fishermen to remain extra cautious when boarding their boats and advised anyone near the river to stay alert. Residents are also worried about children who frequently swim in the river, fearing they could become victims of crocodile attacks.
He added that anglers, especially those from outside the area, might be unaware of the danger and could unknowingly put themselves at risk while fishing along the riverbanks.
The resident called on community leaders to install warning signboards along the river to alert both locals and visitors about the crocodile threat and remind them to take necessary safety precautions.
He also urged the Sabah Wildlife Department to take immediate action to capture the remaining crocodiles believed to be in the river to ensure the safety of villagers and the public.
