Tanjong Sepat Pig Farm Closure Nears Completion With 11,000 Pigs Remaining

Date:

The process of clearing pig farms in Tanjong Sepat is nearing completion, with only about 11,000 pigs remaining at roughly 30 farms still in operation.

Selangor Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Izham Hashim said the remaining livestock have yet to reach suitable maturity for disposal or slaughter since the closure order was issued in February.

“No new piglets are being brought into the farms, and all remaining pigs will be slaughtered at the abattoir in Rawang,” he said when met in Sijangkang today.

According to Izham, the process is being carried out in stages and is expected to be completed soon.

It was previously reported that all pig farms in Tanjong Sepat would be fully vacated and shut down by the end of next month before enforcement action begins on July 1.

Tanjong Sepat assemblyman Borhan Aman Shah previously stated that the Selangor government had granted farm operators a six-month grace period to settle their affairs, including selling off their livestock.

Meanwhile, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has maintained his stance against pig farming activities being carried out in any district within Selangor, as previously emphasised by the ruler.

In the meantime, Izham said the state government would assist all 87 affected pig farm operators in transitioning to other forms of agricultural activities after their livestock businesses are fully halted.

He revealed that he, Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari and the Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister recently held discussions regarding plans for the transition.

“The transition is important to ensure high-value agricultural activities can be developed on the 350-acre site,” he explained.

Izham added that another meeting is scheduled for June 9 to determine the best measures by both the federal and state governments to assist farmers, particularly in restoring and rehabilitating the affected land areas.

The closure of the pig farms marks a major shift in agricultural planning within the area, with authorities now focusing on long-term redevelopment and alternative farming opportunities for affected operators.
