Freddie Mercury Celebrated with Royal Mint Commemorative Coin

Date:

The Royal Mint has unveiled a special coin celebrating the legacy of Freddie Mercury, a tribute that the late Queen frontman’s sister, Kashmira Bulsara, said would have “meant the world” to him.

The coin features Mercury mid-performance, along with his signature, reflecting his flamboyant stage presence. Design details pay homage to his artistry, including a musical stave around the edge symbolising his four-octave vocal range and a studded armband inspired by his iconic Live Aid outfit. Certain versions also include colour, bringing to life his memorable yellow jacket.

Released in the 40th anniversary year of both the 1985 Live Aid concert and Mercury’s solo studio album Mr Bad Guy, the coin is available to purchase from Nov 18 via the Royal Mint website. Mercury’s sister struck the first coin during an emotional visit to the Mint.

“Freddie would have been absolutely delighted to see himself honoured in this way,” she said, adding that his deep respect for British traditions made the tribute especially meaningful.

Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coins at the Royal Mint, described Mercury as “a force of nature who transformed every stage he stepped onto”, adding that the intricate design celebrates his enduring cultural impact.

The collectable coin continues the Mint’s Music Legends series, which has previously honoured figures such as David Bowie, George Michael, Dame Shirley Bassey and Sir Paul McCartney.

A gold proof edition will be gifted to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, the AIDS charity established in his memory, to be auctioned in support of those affected by HIV and AIDS.

Coin Pricing Highlights:

  • £5 brilliant uncirculated coin: £18.50 (approx. RM101)
  • £5 brilliant uncirculated colour coin: £29.50
  • 1-ounce silver proof £2 colour coin: £144.50 (approx. RM791.30)
  • 2-ounce gold proof £200 coin: £9,350 (approx. RM51,200)

Coins will be available via the Royal Mint and the official Freddie Mercury store.

Mercury, who passed away in 1991, remains celebrated for timeless hits including Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are The Champions, Don’t Stop Me Now, and I Want to Break Free.
