Malaysian singer Gary Chaw has kicked off his 20th anniversary tour titled “Open Your Ears and Listen to Me Speak”, with the opening show held in Shanghai on April 11, alongside regular updates and behind-the-scenes posts shared with fans online.
However, a recent post on April 17 drew unexpected attention after the award-winning singer made a typographical error in his self-introduction on Threads, which quickly went viral among netizens.
In the post, he mistakenly wrote “I am Gay Chaw” instead of “Gary Chaw,” after missing the letter “R” in his English name. The slip-up sparked widespread reactions online, with many fans joking about the unintended wording.

The post was later deleted and re-uploaded, with Chaw responding in good humour when questioned by followers. He explained that it was simply a typing mistake caused by missing a letter, adding light-heartedly that he had overlooked the error.
Chaw, who has long been a prominent figure in the Mandarin pop scene, has previously addressed public misconceptions about his personal life early in his career. During his 2008 Golden Melody Awards acceptance speech, he clarified aspects of his personal background, while emphasising that he respects all communities.
Despite the online mix-up, his anniversary tour continues across major cities including Guangzhou, Changsha, Chongqing, Hefei, Hangzhou, Beijing, Nanjing, Chengdu, Macau and Hong Kong, although no Taiwan stop has been announced so far.
Chaw also expressed appreciation for his Taiwan fans, saying they remain close to his heart and that he hopes to meet them again in future performances.
