‘Jumanji: Open World’ Trailer Unleashes Video Game Chaos Into The Real World

Date:

The world of Jumanji is about to get even wilder as Sony Pictures Entertainment unveils the latest trailer for Jumanji: Open World, featuring returning stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Karen Gillan and Kevin Hart.

The upcoming film, scheduled to hit cinemas on 25 December 2026, is the latest instalment in the franchise and the third to focus on a retro video game rather than the original board game.

This time, the game is no longer confined to a console. Instead, it spills into the real world, unleashing jungle animals into suburban neighbourhoods while the players find themselves trapped in demo mode.

Directed by Jake Kasdan, who returns after helming the previous two films, Jumanji: Open World brings back several familiar faces, including Alex Wolff, Ser’Darius Blain, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner and Rhys Darby. Awkwafina and Danny DeVito also join the returning cast.

When Jumanji Escapes Into The Real World

The new trailer opens with chaotic scenes of jungle animals rampaging through suburbia during the Christmas season.

Spencer Gilpin, played by Alex Wolff, suspects that the game is beginning to cross into reality. Things take a dramatic turn when his mother, played by Marin Hinkle, is sucked into the game.

In a comedic twist, she ends up in the body of Dr Xander “Smolder” Bravestone, played by Johnson, but refuses to fight. Spencer, meanwhile, finds himself in the body of Ruby Roundhouse, played by Gillan, and must try to protect her.

The body-swapping chaos continues as chef Donatas, played by Dan Hildebrand, enters the game in the body of Professor Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon, played by Black.

Meanwhile, young Tyson, Nora’s nephew, finds himself inhabiting the body of Franklin “Mouse” Finbar, played by Hart.

The trailer also features the return of Nick Jonas as Jefferson “Seaplane” McDonough, alongside a series of action-packed sequences that hint at the scale of the latest adventure.

As the danger escalates, Spencer warns that their home will be destroyed if they fail to win the game.

Promising “one final game”, the trailer suggests the characters will face their most challenging mission yet.

A Bigger Adventure For The Jumanji Cast

The previous films used the video game concept to let Johnson, Black, Gillan and Hart portray exaggerated personalities trapped inside their in-game avatars.

Jumanji: Open World appears set to push that formula even further, introducing more body-swapping mishaps, new personalities and higher stakes.

If this is the final chapter of Kasdan’s trilogy, which began with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in 2017 and continued with Jumanji: The Next Level in 2019, the expanded scale could provide a fitting conclusion to the adventure.

Unlike a typical game, the characters may not get another chance to restart if they fail.

Can Jumanji Deliver Another Box Office Hit?

The franchise has already established itself as a major commercial success.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle earned approximately US$963 million worldwide against a reported US$90 million budget, while Jumanji: The Next Level grossed around US$801 million against an estimated US$125 million budget.

Although the budget for Jumanji: Open World has not been disclosed, the latest trailer points towards another large-scale action comedy with considerable box-office potential.

Whether the film can match the success of its predecessors remains to be seen, but the return of its popular cast and the promise of a final game could make it one of the major cinema releases of the 2026 Christmas season.
