Louis Tomlinson Says He’ll “Never Accept” Liam Payne’s Death

Date:

Louis Tomlinson says he’s still struggling to come to terms with the death of his former One Direction bandmate, Liam Payne — even a year later.

In a candid interview with The Independent published on Oct. 18, Louis shared that grief continues to hit him hard, despite the personal losses he’s already endured. “I naively thought that at this point, I’d be a little more well-versed with grief than others my age,” said the Back to You singer, whose mother and sister passed away in 2016 and 2019. “I thought that might mean something, but it didn’t at all.”

Liam Payne died in October 2024 after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony in Argentina, a tragedy that shook fans around the world. Louis admitted that accepting the loss still feels impossible. “It’s something I’ll never really accept, I don’t think,” he said.

The two first met in 2010 as members of One Direction, alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, and Niall Horan — a group that went on to become one of the biggest boy bands in history. Even after the band went on hiatus in 2016, Louis said Liam remained someone who always showed up for him.

Reflecting on their friendship, Louis shared that Liam was unwaveringly supportive, even when he was struggling himself. “This isn’t a comment aimed at the other boys—but I know if it was me, I would’ve struggled with that idea,” Louis said, recalling times Liam joined him for appearances like The X Factor. “Any opportunity Liam got like that, he was always there for me. Even if he might have been struggling, he put himself second and still turned up. Those moments really show the truth of who he was as a person.”

Louis also recently spoke about Liam’s legacy on the Diary of a CEO podcast, where he reflected on the impact his late bandmate had on the group. “I could go on all day about how amazing he was,” Louis said. “I think we all looked up to him — even if, back then, we didn’t have the courage to admit it.”
