The son of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner has been arrested on suspicion of murder after Reiner and his wife were found dead in their Los Angeles home.
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed on Monday that Nick Reiner, 32, was taken into custody without bail in connection with the deaths of his parents. The couple were discovered with multiple stab wounds at their residence in Brentwood, an affluent neighbourhood in Los Angeles.
According to sources cited by CBS News, the couple’s 28-year-old daughter, Romy Reiner, found their bodies on Sunday and alerted authorities. Emergency services arrived at the home at about 3.38pm local time, and Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Nick Reiner was arrested several hours later, at approximately 9.15pm on Sunday. Police have not disclosed a possible motive, and investigations are ongoing.
Nick Reiner has previously spoken publicly about his struggles with addiction and homelessness. His experiences inspired the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which he co-produced with his father in 2015.
Rob Reiner was a highly influential figure in Hollywood, best known for directing acclaimed films such as When Harry Met Sally, This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, Misery and A Few Good Men. He began his career as an actor in the 1960s, gaining fame for his role as “Meathead” in the television sitcom All in the Family.
Michele Reiner was an actress, photographer and producer, and the founder of Reiner Light, a photography agency and production company. The couple married in 1989 and have three children together.
The case has drawn widespread attention, with tributes pouring in from friends and colleagues in the entertainment industry. Several public figures have urged compassion for the family, emphasising that the incident is a personal tragedy.
Police have said further details will be released as the investigation progresses.
