Authorities in Terengganu are investigating two viral video clips allegedly showing wastewater being discharged into the sea near a resort jetty on Perhentian Island.
State tourism, culture, environment and climate change committee chairman Razali Idris said he has been informed of the matter and has requested a detailed report from all parties involved.
He said preliminary information suggests the discharge may involve treated wastewater that complies with existing standards, but the situation remains under review pending further verification.
Razali stressed that the state government takes environmental protection and tourism image concerns seriously, adding that firm action will be taken if any violations are confirmed.
The videos, which circulated on the Threads social media platform, appear to show a pipe releasing murky liquid directly into the sea, prompting concern among divers and online users.
The user who shared the clips also urged divers to remain cautious while diving in the area.
In response, the resort management said it operates a wastewater treatment system and confirmed the discharge was treated effluent released during temporary modification works.
The resort also reiterated its commitment to environmental responsibility and safeguarding the natural ecosystem of Perhentian Island for visitors and the local community.
