A mother-of-two has spoken out after shocking CCTV recordings revealed a sustained pattern of violent abuse allegedly carried out by her former partner over several months.
Marie, not her real name, said hidden home cameras installed for her children’s safety ultimately captured repeated attacks by Spencer Dean, 34, in their home in Ashford, Kent.
The disturbing footage allegedly shows Dean punching, kicking, grabbing and spitting at her during multiple incidents, with some assaults taking place while her children were nearby. The videos also reportedly capture him throwing objects, pulling her hair and forcing her into furniture during heated outbursts.
Such cases have once again highlighted the hidden nature of domestic abuse, where victims may suffer prolonged harm behind closed doors before evidence comes to light. Experts often stress that early documentation and support can play a crucial role in protecting those at risk.
Marie said the abuse only came to light after she discreetly contacted a neighbour for help, leading to police intervention. Officers later reviewed CCTV recordings from the property and uncovered a series of violent incidents spanning months.
In one of the most serious episodes shown in the footage, Dean allegedly assaulted her in the kitchen, while other clips reportedly show him striking her repeatedly and shouting during confrontations. She described the environment as increasingly controlling and isolating over time.
Dean, a roofer, later admitted multiple offences including assault by beating and criminal damage at Margate Magistrates’ Court. He was sentenced to a 12-month community order, alongside unpaid work, rehabilitation sessions and a restraining order.
The decision not to impose an immediate custodial sentence has prompted concern from the victim, who said she was “shocked” by the outcome but hopes her experience will encourage other victims to seek help and gather evidence safely where possible.
