A Chinese woman caused a commotion at Kunming Airport on April 11, 2026, after refusing to pay for checked baggage on a low-cost airline, leading to a heated confrontation with airport staff that quickly went viral online.
According to eyewitness accounts shared on social media, the incident involved a family of five who were travelling with a budget airline that does not include free baggage allowance. The group reportedly attempted to pass through check-in without paying for luggage fees but were stopped by airport personnel.
Tensions escalated when the woman allegedly began shouting at staff while trying to force her luggage through. A female airport employee was seen struggling with her over a suitcase, and both reportedly fell to the ground during the altercation.
The situation worsened when the woman’s daughter allegedly intervened and kicked a staff member before being restrained by another employee. The woman then reportedly lashed out again, kicking a male staff member while lying on the floor.
Footage circulating online also shows the woman lying on the ground, with some claiming she was pretending to faint. Two children present at the scene were seen crying amid the disturbance.
The incident has triggered widespread discussion on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), where users debated the pricing model of low-cost airlines and passenger awareness of additional charges.
Some netizens argued that many travellers fail to understand budget airline policies, while others criticised the behaviour as unacceptable regardless of pricing confusion.
The case has also drawn international reactions, with some expressing shock at the confrontation over baggage fees. Similar incidents involving Chinese passengers have previously gone viral abroad, including a 2025 case at Milan Airport involving a dispute over excess luggage charges.
