The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested a former education centre director from a public university, who holds the title Datuk, over allegations of abusing his position involving approximately RM1 million for personal use.
The suspect, a man in his 60s, has been remanded for five days until April 19 following an application by MACC at the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Sources revealed that the arrest was made at around 8pm on Tuesday when the individual appeared at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya to provide his statement. The case is seen as another example highlighting ongoing concerns surrounding governance and accountability within public institutions.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the alleged offences took place between 2023 and 2025, during his tenure as director of the institution’s education centre. He is believed to have had vested interests in a company directly linked to the centre and allegedly channelled funds for personal benefit.
Further inquiries led MACC to freeze four bank accounts, comprising one company account and three individual accounts, with a combined total of approximately RM600,000. Such enforcement action reflects the commission’s continued efforts to clamp down on financial misconduct involving public funds.
Meanwhile, MACC Deputy Director of Investigation Division, Datuk Yuhafiz Mohd Salleh, confirmed the arrest when contacted, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009, focusing on both criminal and governance aspects.
