A 70-year-old driver has been granted police bail after a fatal crash in a residential area yesterday that killed a food delivery rider, following confirmation that the accident was caused by negligent driving.
Petaling Jaya District Police Chief ACP Shamsudin Mamat said investigations found that the sports utility vehicle (SUV) involved had veered out of control due to the driver’s carelessness, resulting in the fatal collision.
He said the victim, a local man in his 20s who was working as a delivery rider, died at the scene after being hit head-on while the driver was reportedly on his way home at the time of the incident.
Police confirmed that the driver held a valid licence and was arrested to assist investigations. Toxicology screening also showed negative results for both drugs and alcohol.
However, authorities later allowed the elderly suspect to be released on police bail due to his age and existing medical conditions.
The fatal crash occurred around 1pm yesterday in Section 17, Petaling Jaya, when the SUV allegedly crossed into the opposite lane before colliding with the motorcycle head-on, causing the rider’s death at the scene.
