Driver Loses Control, Five Vehicles Involved In Kota Setar Crash

Date:

A senior driver lost control of his Honda HR-V before veering into the opposite lane, causing a five-vehicle collision near the Jalan Pegawai traffic light junction yesterday afternoon.

The accident, which occurred at about 2.33pm, involved a Mercedes-Benz, two Perodua Axia cars, and a Perodua Ativa.

Kota Setar district police chief Assistant Commissioner Syed Basri Syed Ali said the 61-year-old HR-V driver was travelling along Jalan Pegawai when he suddenly crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a Mercedes-Benz driven by a 65-year-old woman.

He added that the impact caused the Mercedes-Benz to rebound and crash into a Perodua Axia coming from the opposite direction. The HR-V then overturned before hitting another Axia and a Perodua Ativa, both of which were stationary at a red light.

Two drivers escaped unharmed — a 53-year-old woman in the Ativa and a 25-year-old man in one of the Axias. The driver of the second Axia was also not injured.

However, the Mercedes-Benz driver suffered injuries to both hands, while the HR-V driver sustained a forehead injury.

Preliminary investigations suggest the crash was caused by the HR-V driver’s failure to maintain control of his vehicle.

The case is being investigated under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules for failure to maintain proper control, an offence that carries a RM300 compound fine.

A video of the multi-vehicle crash has since gone viral on social media, drawing public attention to the incident.
