A drug detainee was jailed for 20 months after admitting to assaulting a fellow inmate and causing a fractured eye socket during a fight at the Muar Correctional Centre earlier this year.
Mohammad Dzaki Robani, 32, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Kartini Kasran, who handed down the sentence after considering submissions from both the prosecution and defence.
Police investigations found that the altercation was allegedly triggered after the accused became upset over the victim’s failure to keep the toilet area clean.
The accused, who is unmarried, was charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt to a 33-year-old detainee at approximately 2.30pm on March 5.
The charge was brought under Section 325 of the Penal Code, which carries a punishment of up to seven years’ imprisonment and a fine upon conviction.
According to the facts of the case, prison wardens were informed about a fight involving two inmates inside the detention centre.
Investigators later discovered that Mohammad Dzaki had punched the victim in the face, resulting in severe injuries.
The victim was subsequently taken to Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital where he underwent surgery for a fractured eye socket.
The incident reportedly took place near the correctional centre’s pond area and was witnessed by two supervisors, who later filed a police report.
Deputy public prosecutor Yasmin Mohd Piah prosecuted the case, while the accused was represented by lawyer Tee Xi Ran from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
