Selangor Sultan Tells Wong Siew Ki, Ronnie Liu To Visit Rukun Negara Monument Weekly Amid Pig Farm Controversy

Date:

The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has called on all Selangor assemblymen to visit Dataran Selangor twice a month to read and better understand the Rukun Negara displayed on a newly installed monument plaque.

In a statement issued today, the ruler specifically addressed Wong Siew Ki and former Selangor executive councillor Ronnie Liu Tian Khiew, suggesting they visit the site once a week to appreciate the principles of the national ideology.

Sultan Sharafuddin said the visits would help foster respect for the royal institution while promoting courtesy and morality among citizens.

The plaque, placed in front of the Selangor state flagpole at Dataran Selangor, was built by the Selangor Public Works Department together with several benches for visitors.

His Royal Highness revealed that he personally funded the construction of the Rukun Negara monument plaque and the benches.

According to the Sultan, the monument serves as a reminder to Malaysians, particularly the younger generation, about the history behind the Rukun Negara, which was introduced following the May 13, 1969 racial riots and the declaration of a nationwide emergency.

The royal statement comes amid recent public debate surrounding Selangor’s proposed large-scale pig farming project in Bukit Tagar.

Sultan Sharafuddin had previously stated that he did not consent to pig farming activities being carried out in any district within Selangor, citing concerns over environmental impact, limited land availability and public well-being.

Earlier this year, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he would discuss with Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari the possibility of cancelling the Bukit Tagar pig farming project and relocating it to a more suitable location.

Anwar later clarified that while pig farming itself was not prohibited, such projects should avoid areas that could trigger public concern, especially near residential communities.
