Tragedy struck Manaus, Brazil, on the evening of the 15th when a four-month-old baby girl died after being accidentally smothered by her aunt. The mother had left the infant in her sister’s care, but the aunt, reportedly intoxicated, rolled over in her sleep and inadvertently pressed on the baby, leading to her death.
The mother returned home to the horrifying scene and immediately called emergency services (SAMU), but medical personnel pronounced the infant dead upon arrival.
The baby’s body has been sent to the Forensic Institute (IML) for a detailed examination to determine the exact cause of death. Local authorities from the Sixth Integrated Police Department (Cicom) have launched an investigation. The aunt has been taken in for questioning, including a blood alcohol test, and may face charges of involuntary manslaughter.
