A director was charged today at the Sessions Court here for allegedly soliciting a RM5 million bribe from an individual to influence the Securities Commission not to take legal action against a trust and asset management company.
P. Kuhan Arunasalam, 39, is accused of committing the act at a restaurant on Jalan Bangkung, Bangsar, on 2 July 2024, under Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009. Conviction under Section 24(1) of the same Act carries a maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
Kuhan pleaded not guilty. Deputy public prosecutor Selvam T. Armugom proposed bail of RM20,000 with one surety, along with additional conditions: surrendering his passport to the court, monthly reporting to the MACC office until the case concludes, and refraining from interfering with prosecution witnesses.
Kuhan’s lawyer, Wan Shahrizan Wan Ladin, did not object to the bail amount and confirmed that his client was willing to comply with any additional conditions set by the court.
Judge Suzana Hussin granted the RM20,000 bail with one surety and the requested conditions, setting the case for a mention on 6 November.
