Man’s Mid-Autumn Reunion Turns Into Food Poisoning Nightmare After Eating Grandma’s Expired Mooncakes

Date:

What was meant to be a warm Mid-Autumn Festival family reunion turned into a “stomach survival challenge” for one man in China. A grandson who returned to his hometown to celebrate was welcomed by his cheerful grandmother, who proudly served him her “precious” mooncakes — only for him to suffer severe diarrhea soon after eating them. As he clutched his aching stomach, his grandmother rushed to help by offering some medicine — which, to his horror, was also expired! The man could only laugh through the pain, joking, “How hard am I to kill?”

He shared the hilarious yet painful story on social media, saying that as soon as he finished the mooncake, his stomach began to rumble, and he quickly dashed to the bathroom. When he told his grandmother what happened, she rummaged through her drawers to find medicine, but it too had long passed its expiration date. “Mid-Autumn turned into Mid-Poison,” he joked. “It’s not that the mooncakes expired — I just came home too late.”

The post went viral, with thousands of netizens laughing and commenting: “Grandma’s fridge is like an archaeological site,” and “That’s the true taste of home — nostalgia mixed with food poisoning.” Others shared a more sentimental take, saying many elderly folks simply don’t pay attention to expiry dates, believing that food is fine as long as it doesn’t smell bad. One comment summed it up perfectly: “It’s not the food that’s expired — it’s you who haven’t come home in too long.”

Doctors, however, reminded everyone that both food and medicine expiration dates should be taken seriously. During festive visits, they urge families to help elderly relatives check and discard expired items to prevent health risks.
