Massive Blaze Engulfs Bekenu Longhouse, Leaving 138 Residents Homeless

Date:

A total of 138 residents were left without shelter after a 21-door longhouse was completely destroyed in a fire at Jalan Sungai Saeh, Kampung Labau, Bekenu, in the early hours of the morning. The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of rural wooden settlements to rapid fire spread.

The blaze, which broke out at about 1.17am, reduced Rumah Panjang Nelson Ningkan to ashes within a short period. Authorities confirmed that the structure was 100 per cent destroyed, leaving all occupants with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. Such incidents often serve as a stark reminder of how quickly emergencies can escalate during late-night hours when residents are least prepared.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), the victims comprise 31 families, including 51 adult men, 52 adult women, five elderly men, 10 elderly women, and 20 children. Emergency responders emphasised that fire safety awareness remains crucial, particularly in densely occupied wooden housing structures.

Fortunately, no fatalities or injuries were reported in the incident, a rare positive outcome in what could have been a far more tragic situation. In many similar cases involving longhouses, swift evacuation has been the key factor in preventing loss of life, underscoring the importance of community alertness and early response systems.

Firefighters from the Batu Niah Fire and Rescue Station were first deployed to the scene, later supported by a team from the Miri Sentral Fire and Rescue Station. Authorities worked to ensure the flames were fully extinguished and that the area was secured to prevent any potential re-ignition or further hazards.

The operation involved coordinated efforts under challenging conditions, with responders arriving shortly after receiving the emergency call. Incidents of this scale often require multiple units and extended deployment due to the rapid spread of fire in timber-based structures.

Investigations are currently ongoing to determine the cause of the fire as well as the total financial losses incurred. Officials have yet to confirm any possible origin, while affected families are expected to receive temporary assistance as recovery efforts begin.
