MCMC Investigates Viral Quran Desecration Incident, Student Faces Legal Action

Date:

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will continue its investigation under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) following the viral incident of an individual stepping on a Quran.

In a statement, MCMC said the probe will proceed after the police conclude their investigation into the person who uploaded the image.

“The content, posted via the Threads account ‘ryandaselva,’ depicts an act of stepping on the Quran. It has been identified as containing elements that insult Islam and could potentially spark tension and threaten public harmony,” the commission said today.

MCMC also confirmed that the individual was questioned at the Kuantan District Police Headquarters yesterday to assist with the investigation.

“If found guilty, the person could face a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both,” it added, urging the public to use social media responsibly and avoid sharing content that disrupts public order, offends religious sensitivities, or harms national unity.

The incident drew widespread attention online when a Threads user, reportedly a student at Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), posted the controversial image and later issued a public apology.
