The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning following forecasts of heavy rain and thunderstorms expected to affect several areas across Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak, Sabah, and Labuan until 9pm today.
In a statement, MetMalaysia said affected areas in the peninsula include Perlis, Kedah, Penang, and Perak (Kerian, Larut, Matang and Selama, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar, Manjung and Kinta), as well as Kelantan (Tumpat, Kota Bharu and Bachok) and Terengganu (Marang).
Heavy rain is also expected in other parts of Terengganu (Dungun and Kemaman) and Pahang (Cameron Highlands, Raub, Bentong and Rompin).
The weather alert further covers Negeri Sembilan (Kuala Pilah, Jempol and Tampin), Melaka (Alor Gajah and Jasin), and Johor (Mersing, Kota Tinggi and Johor Bahru).
In Sarawak, severe weather is expected in Kapit (Kapit, Bukit Mabong and Belaga), Miri, and Limbang.
For Sabah, heavy rain is forecast over the Interior, West Coast, Sandakan (Kinabatangan and Sandakan), and Kudat (Kota Marudu), while Labuan is also expected to be affected.
MetMalaysia said a thunderstorm warning is issued when signs indicate storm activity with rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour, expected to last for more than an hour.
It added that the warning is short-term in nature and is valid for no more than six hours for each issuance.
