Mysterious Thief Targets Sleeping Students, Steals Over RM5,000 Across Dorm Rooms

Date:

A mysterious thief, nicknamed “Kaitou Kid” by students, has been targeting male dormitories at National Pingtung University of Science and Technology. The burglar reportedly struck on the early mornings of Monday and Tuesday, entering multiple rooms in the dark without turning on lights and stealing cash from wallets left on desks.

Students say over a dozen were victims, with losses in individual rooms reaching up to NT$6,500 (approx. RM930), and the total stolen amount estimated to be tens of thousands of NT dollars (roughly RM5,000–RM7,000). One student commented, “The thief seemed to know who had the most money. He was smart.”

The dormitory, a four-story building housing roughly 400 students, has more than 30 rooms per floor. The suspect, described as a man with sideburns wearing a face mask, sweatpants, and flip-flops, moved through the first three floors, staying just three to four minutes in each room. Students reported sleeping through the thefts without noticing any unusual sounds.

Some students pointed out that one of the main dormitory doors had been broken for several days, allowing easier access. While the thief appeared to target male dorm rooms specifically, authorities have not yet confirmed whether it was an inside job or an external intruder exploiting unlocked doors.

The university said it would strengthen dorm security measures and urged students to lock their doors when leaving. Police are currently investigating the incidents.
