Namewee Tests Negative for Drugs, Possession Case Pending

Authorities found no traces of drugs in Namewee’s system, the magistrates’ court heard today.

Lawyer Joshua Tay, representing Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, told reporters that the urine test report presented by the prosecution confirmed the absence of drugs in his client’s body.

Tay spoke after the case was mentioned before two separate magistrates’ courts here. He added that the prosecution is expected to drop the charge soon.

Namewee, 42, faces a charge of self-administering amphetamine, methamphetamine, THC, and ketamine, under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act. Conviction carries a maximum fine of RM5,000, up to two years’ imprisonment, and supervision for between two and three years.

Regarding a separate drug possession charge, Tay said his team is still awaiting the updated chemist report from the prosecution. Namewee is accused of possessing 5.12 grams of Ecstasy in a hotel room along Jalan Conlay on the evening of Oct 22.

The possession charge is framed under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act and is punishable under Section 39A(1), which carries two to five years in jail and three to nine strokes of whipping.
