Prison Abuse Findings Trigger Calls For Transparency And Action

Date:

The Malaysia Prisons Department has pledged to carry out a comprehensive and transparent review of a report by the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) detailing allegations of systemic violence and medical negligence at Taiping Prison.

In a statement today, the department said it takes seriously all findings and recommendations raised by the Suhakam inquiry panel, including claims involving prison management and personnel.

It said it would fully cooperate with all relevant parties to ensure the report is examined thoroughly, in detail and with integrity so that all issues raised are properly addressed.

The response comes after the release of the Suhakam report, which a federal minister described as presenting a “harrowing” account of incidents at the prison in January 2025.

The inquiry reportedly found evidence of excessive physical violence, including the alleged misuse of batons and pepper spray against handcuffed detainees, as well as deliberate falsification of medical records.

The findings were also linked to the death of inmate Gan Chin Eng and injuries sustained by more than 100 detainees referred to as “prospects”.

The matter has drawn further attention after Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo described the findings as “deeply disturbing” and said he would raise the issue in Cabinet.

He also called for greater transparency from the Inspector-General of Police and the Attorney-General, questioning why only one officer has been charged despite the scale of the alleged abuses.

The department reiterated its commitment to ensuring security, welfare and rehabilitation efforts comply with human rights standards and established procedures.

It also urged all parties to avoid speculation or premature conclusions that could interfere with the ongoing review process and subsequent action by authorities.
