RM230 Million Zakat Funds Scandal: NGO Deputy Chairman Among Three Arrested

Date:

Three individuals, including a deputy chairman of a non-governmental organisation (NGO), were arrested on Tuesday over alleged misappropriation of zakat funds amounting to approximately RM230 million.

Sources revealed that two male suspects in their 50s and 60s were detained between 3pm and 5pm during an operation conducted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Selangor across the Klang Valley. Another suspect, also in his 50s, was arrested earlier at around 2pm while attending a session to provide a statement at the Selangor MACC office.

Preliminary investigations indicate that all three suspects, two of whom are company directors, are believed to have conspired in the alleged misconduct between 2018 and 2024. Authorities suspect that the NGO’s deputy chairman had transferred the RM230 million into his own company’s accounts for both investment purposes and personal use.

The case has drawn serious concern as investigations are now focusing on elements of public fund misappropriation, given that the NGO reportedly collects donations from the public to assist those in need. Such cases highlight the importance of transparency and accountability in managing charitable contributions.

During the operation, MACC also seized 18 luxury vehicles, including brands such as Porsche and Mercedes-Benz, believed to be linked to the investigation. In addition, properties worth approximately RM11 million, along with other movable assets including cash and luxury watches, were confiscated.

Authorities further confirmed that 33 bank accounts containing around RM120 million have been frozen as part of the probe. The scale of the seizure underscores the seriousness of the alleged offences and ongoing efforts to trace misused funds.

Selangor MACC director Mohd Azwan Ramli confirmed the arrests when contacted, stating that the case is being investigated under the MACC Act 2009. All suspects are expected to be brought before the Shah Alam Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for remand proceedings.
