Sabah Roads Spark Outrage Online – Drivers Say ‘Better Pay Toll Than Drive Here’

Date:

A frustrated Sabahan driver vented on Threads about the state of roads in Sabah, highlighting a stark contrast with the smoother highways of Peninsular Malaysia.

“After driving in Peninsular Malaysia, I’d rather pay tolls for good roads than endure free roads like this — my car ends up ‘crying,’” he wrote, sharing a video showing pothole-ridden and uneven surfaces.

The post quickly resonated with other road users, many agreeing that Sabah’s roads lag behind. One netizen, azriyussof, noted the hidden costs of poor roads:

“Tolls are way cheaper than constantly replacing absorbers, suspension parts, and doing alignments. Better to pay tolls if the road is smooth, right?”

Another user, felveyeatika.ann, recalled her experience on Peninsular roads, saying even village streets were impressively maintained.

“Even the kampung roads were nice, right up to the doorstep. In Sabah, it’s a different story,” she commented, pointing to the infrastructure gap.

Adding some humour, davidpeternambi warned that non-SUV vehicles would struggle even more.

“If this were a Honda Accord, it’d be finished. In a month, the car’s undercarriage would be destroyed,” he said, highlighting the everyday challenges faced by drivers in the state.
