A senior police officer has been remanded for four days to assist investigations into an alleged extortion case linked to an incident in Bukit Bintang earlier this year.
The suspect, believed to hold the rank of Assistant Superintendent, was detained following a report lodged over the alleged incident.
Dang Wangi district police chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion.
According to police, the incident allegedly took place at about 1.30am on March 14 at a restaurant along Jalan Angsoka in Bukit Bintang.
The complainant claimed his colleague was approached and detained by a group of policemen after getting out of a vehicle.
The colleague was allegedly accused of being involved in scam or call centre activities and was handcuffed for nearly an hour before later being released.
Police said the complainant further alleged that he was forced to hand over RM5,000 to the individuals involved during the incident.
Later that same day, the complainant allegedly received another call requesting a meeting at a premises in Ampang to discuss settling a case involving his employer, who was claimed to be wanted by authorities in China and Cambodia.
During the meeting, the complainant alleged that he was again asked to hand over RM2,500.
Sazalee said the complainant later lodged a police report as he was dissatisfied with the actions of the officer involved, including allegations of intimidation and demanding money.
Investigations into the case are ongoing.
