Seven Areas In Peninsular Malaysia Record Level 2 Heatwave Warning

Date:

Seven locations across Peninsular Malaysia have been recorded at Level 2, signifying a heatwave as of this morning. According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the affected areas include the entire state of Perlis, several districts in Kedah—namely Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Pendang, Sik, and Baling—as well as Hulu Perak in the state of Perak. This current weather update highlights a significant rise in temperatures across the northern region of the country.

In the same weather status update released at 6 AM today, MetMalaysia also identified 13 other areas currently placed under Level 1, which is the alert category. The regions listed under this cautionary level include Padang Terap, Kubang Pasu, Pulau Langkawi, Kuala Muda, and Kulim-Bandar Baharu in Kedah. Additionally, the Northeast and North districts of Penang, alongside Selama, Kinta, Kuala Kangsar, and Perak Tengah in Perak, and Jerantut in Pahang, are also experiencing these elevated temperatures.

MetMalaysia clarified that a Level 2 status, or a formal heatwave declaration, occurs when daily maximum temperatures consistently range between 37°C and 40°C. For this classification to be official, these extreme temperatures must persist for at least three consecutive days. The department monitors these patterns closely to provide timely information to the public regarding potential health risks associated with prolonged heat exposure.

Conversely, a Level 1 alert refers to a situation where the daily maximum temperature hovers between 35°C and 37°C for three straight days. While less severe than a heatwave, this level still necessitates a degree of vigilance from the local population. Residents in these 13 areas are advised to take necessary precautions to stay hydrated and minimise outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.

The department continues to update the public on the status of the hot weather to ensure that residents in the affected states remain informed. As the heat persists in various parts of the Peninsula, Malaysians are encouraged to follow the guidelines issued by health authorities. These updates serve as a crucial tool for local communities to manage their daily routines safely amidst the changing climatic conditions.
