SPM Candidate Falls Into 5.4-Metre Well While Waiting For Exam, Rescued In Minutes

Date:

A Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidate had a frightening experience after falling into a well about 5.4 metres deep while waiting to sit for his examination at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Falahiah in Wakaf Bharu on Sunday.

The 17-year-old male student was rescued by firefighters within approximately five minutes. He was later handed over to medical personnel for further treatment after sustaining minor head injuries and several cuts on his body.

Wakaf Bharu Fire and Rescue Station operations commander, Senior Fire Officer I Azmi Sulaiman, said the department received an emergency call at 9.12am, prompting a team of six personnel and a fire engine to be dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival at 9.23am, firefighters discovered the victim trapped inside an old, unused well.

Initial investigations found that the student had been sitting on the cement cover of the well when the structure suddenly gave way, causing him to fall inside.

Rescue personnel used specialised equipment, including ropes and a ladder, to safely bring the victim out.

The water level inside the well was reported to be around 0.3 metres, reaching approximately waist height. The situation was brought under control by 9.34am, and the operation concluded fully at 10am.

The student was subsequently handed over to the Ministry of Health for further medical attention.
