Teacher Pleads Not Guilty to Attempted Murder of Wife in Sungai Ara

Date:

A teacher has pleaded not guilty to attempting to murder his wife in a Sessions Court today.

Muhammad Nazmi Izzuddin Muhamad Zubairi, 30, entered the plea before Judge Ahzal Fariz Ahmad Khairuddin. He is accused of attacking his 28-year-old wife, Hanis Sofea Hamdan, with a knife at their home in Taman Tunas Muda, Sungai Ara, at 5:45am on August 27.

The charge, under Section 307 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum prison term of 20 years upon conviction.

The court granted bail of RM15,000 with one surety, while imposing conditions that the accused must report monthly to the nearest police station, surrender his passport, and avoid contacting the victim.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Asma’ ‘Amirah Shahidani informed the court that Muhammad Nazmi Izzuddin’s psychiatric report had been completed and submitted to the defence. She initially opposed bail, citing the seriousness of the non-bailable offence and the need to protect the victim.

The accused’s lawyer, Muhaimin Hashim, assisted by Yazid Khairul Azman and Ismat Arif Abu Hassan, requested bail, noting that Muhammad Nazmi Izzuddin is still employed as a teacher and risked losing his civil service position if denied. He also highlighted that the accused has been receiving psychiatric treatment for major depressive disorder at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta, Perak, and is taking medication including mirtazapine.

The lawyer assured the court that his client would comply with all bail conditions, including regular police reporting. The court has scheduled January 6, 2026, for the next mention and submission of documents.
