Three brothers were charged at the Magistrate’s Court here on Tuesday with the murder of a man near a playground in Taman Muhibbah, Merlimau, earlier this month.
The accused — R. Murugan, 20, R. Arunasalam, 27, and R. Magendran, 28 — nodded in understanding after the charge was read in Tamil before Magistrate Mazana Sinin.
However, no plea was recorded as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
According to the charge, the three siblings were accused of jointly murdering Richard Edward, 30, near a playground at Jalan Anum 3, Taman Muhibbah, Merlimau, within the Jasin district between 8pm and 8.30pm on May 13.
They were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same law.
The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Syazwani Yusri, while lawyer L. Sherveen represented all three accused.
The court fixed July 27 for the next mention of the case as well as submission of chemical and pathology reports.
Earlier reports stated that the victim, who was unemployed, died after being stabbed during a fight believed to have stemmed from a dispute involving the sale of mushroom-flavoured electronic cigarettes or vape products at the playground area in Taman Muhibbah, Merlimau.
