A fire broke out on the morning of September 29 at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, affecting a building under demolition within the airport premises. Around 9:10 a.m., flames and thick smoke were seen rising from the roof, prompting a large-scale firefighting operation.
According to reports from Asahi TV, the Tokyo Fire Department dispatched 34 vehicles, including fire engines, to the scene. The fire, which spread over roughly 10 square meters, was concentrated on the building’s roof. Authorities are currently confirming whether anyone was trapped inside, though no casualties have been reported so far. The fire did not affect airport flight operations.
Initial reports noted witnesses seeing black smoke billowing from the construction site, leading to the dispatch of 27 fire trucks initially, followed by additional reinforcements. JX Press and NHK reported that videos captured by bystanders showed thick smoke rising into the sky, with flames visible through the scaffolding. Some social media users described the sight as alarming, particularly when viewed from the aircraft hangar area.
The Tokyo Airport Office under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism confirmed that all airport operations were running normally. As of 10 a.m., firefighters were still working to fully extinguish the blaze. Police and fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire and whether anyone was inside the building at the time. The incident occurred during a busy period at Haneda, drawing significant public attention despite no impact on flights.
