Woman Stabs Elderly Neighbour Over RM348 Debt – Smokes Calmly After Arrest

Date:

Brenda Heslop, 63, has been jailed for life after fatally stabbing her elderly neighbour, 68-year-old John Hardy, over a £60 (approx. RM348) debt in Elswick, Newcastle, last November. Bodycam footage captured Heslop calmly taking a drag from a cigarette after police informed her of her arrest, reportedly responding: “Oh, he’s never died, has he?”

The court heard that Heslop frequently lent Hardy money to support his gambling habit, and the two fell out when she demanded repayment of a £60 (RM348) loan. On the night of the attack, Heslop armed herself with a kitchen knife and confronted Hardy as he returned home. She stabbed him three times—twice in the chest and once in the hand—before seizing £50 (approx. RM290) from him. Despite paramedics’ efforts, Hardy died in the back of an ambulance.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Atherton described the murder as “one of the cruellest ways possible.” Hardy’s family expressed heartbreak over the loss of their “lovely brother,” emphasizing the lasting impact of Heslop’s actions.

Heslop admitted that her intention was to “scare” Hardy into repaying the debt but ultimately pleaded guilty to murder. At Newcastle Crown Court, she was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum of 20 years behind bars.

Friends and neighbours paid tribute to Hardy, describing him as a kind, caring man who lived independently despite long-term physical disabilities and was loved by all who knew him.
