Thirteen people were killed after a small tourist aircraft crashed near the archaeological site of the Nazca Lines in southern Peru, according to reports by Sputnik/RIA Novosti citing local broadcaster TVPeru.
The victims included 11 foreign tourists, comprising seven Italians, two Germans and two Spanish nationals, while the remaining two victims were crew members who were both Peruvian citizens.
Local radio station RPP reported that the cause of the crash has yet to be determined.
Authorities said the aircraft crew had sent an emergency signal before communication with the plane was lost. A fire broke out shortly after the aircraft crashed.
Rescue teams who arrived at the scene confirmed that all people onboard had died in the incident.
The Nazca Lines, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are among Peru’s most famous archaeological attractions, drawing tourists from around the world for aerial sightseeing tours.
