China Battles Floods And Destruction After Typhoon Bavi Landfall

Date:

Emergency teams in China were deployed on Sunday to clear roads blocked by fallen trees after Typhoon Bavi triggered floods, landslides and forced nearly two million people to evacuate.

The storm weakened into a tropical storm after making landfall but continued to pose a threat, with authorities warning of prolonged heavy rainfall in eastern and northern parts of Beijing.

Bavi brought powerful winds reaching up to 144 kilometres per hour, along with intense rain across areas along its path, causing widespread disruption.

As a precaution against the second major storm to hit the region within a week, authorities temporarily suspended schools, work operations, transport services and outdoor activities in affected areas.

In Zhejiang province, more than 400 flights and dozens of train services were cancelled as the storm disrupted travel plans.

The impact came shortly after Typhoon Maysak struck parts of southern and central China earlier in the week, leaving at least 39 people dead and causing severe damage, including overflowing rivers and the collapse of a reservoir.

Before reaching China, Bavi passed over northern Taiwan, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall that affected large parts of the island.

Taiwan’s fire department reported 134 people injured, mostly due to falls, motorcycle accidents and being hit by falling objects, although no deaths were recorded.

The Transport Ministry also confirmed the cancellation of 137 international flights and 62 domestic flights, while more than 14,000 residents were evacuated and around 170,000 homes in Taipei lost electricity on Saturday.

Bavi was downgraded after previously hitting Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands as a super typhoon before moving across the Pacific Ocean.

Meanwhile, in the Philippines, heavy rain linked to Bavi caused floods and landslides that killed 18 people, while nearly 11,000 residents were forced to leave their homes. Several ports also remained closed.

In Japan, more than 18,000 households and businesses in Okinawa lost power after the storm affected remote islands, with Miyako receiving the worst impact.
